Earsham Street

📍 Wingfield, Suffolk

We sometimes get asked about Earsham Street, so we thought we’d gently clear things up.

Our home is on Earsham Street in Wingfield, not Earsham Street in Bungay.

Earsham Street here at Wingfield is best described as a hamlet — a small, close-knit cluster of homes set along an old rural road. The name goes back hundreds of years, to a time when roads were simply known by where they led.

Street comes from an old word meaning a well-used route, and this one was the road that carried people, carts and livestock between Earsham, Bungay and the surrounding villages.

Over time, the name settled in more than one place along that route — which is why you’ll find an Earsham Street both by Bungay and here in the countryside at Wingfield.

Incidentally, Earsham Street in Bungay is a lovely place to visit. It’s full of character, cafés and independent shops — well worth a special trip.
